This is a great starting point for any singers who are unsure of what range they may have as I’ll go over a few key ways to figure out your voice type.
Bass, Baritone and Tenor are the three lower voice types that primarily sing on the Bass clef, although Tenors also sometimes sing on the Treble Clef down the octave.
Let's start with the lowest range called Bass. The standard range is from E2 to E4 and can probably sing in head voice up to around G4. As a Bass your voice should feel comfortable and easy somewhere around G2 to C4. Basses typically also have a rich and full timbre, with a deep rumbling quality.
If your voice starts switching to head voice around C4, then this is more information that you are in fact a Bass. Slide up through this range on a siren to see if this is where this happens. Let your voice crack if it's going to.
Baritones have a range slightly higher than a Bass, usually from G2 to G4. They can often sing up to C5 or higher in head voice. Baritones can sing comfortably in the middle of this range from A2 to E4. They typically have a weight or heavy sound to their tone and break range is around D4 or E4. Try sliding on a siren around this area. Notice where you crack.
Tenors are the highest of the lower voice types above Baritone, but below an Alto. The range sits around B2 up to C5 in chest voice and up to A5 in head voice. They have a brighter and lighter tone with lots of pingy resonance compared to the Baritone and Bass voice types. See if you can sing comfortably in the middle of this range from D2 to G4. The break range is around F#4 or G#4
2) Alto, Mezzo Soprano, Soprano
Let’s move on to the three upper voice types Alto, Mezzo Soprano, and Soprano.
An Alto typically has a range from F3 to A4 in chest voice up to F5 in head voice. If you think you are an Alto then see if you can sing comfortably in the middle of this range from A3 to D5. They also have a more reedy or weighted sound than other upper voice types.
An Alto is typically going to be transitioning out of chest voice into head voice through their passaggio around A4 or B4.
A Mezzo Soprano has a range from A3 to A5. First check and see if C4 to F5 are a comfortable area for you to sing. A Mezzo Soprano will switch to head voice around A4 and often sings and switches often between registers. Sing a siren with me and notice where your voice breaks or switches.
Sopranos have the highest voice type around C4 to C6 or higher. While the tone quality can vary they typically have a lighter and brighter tone than an Alto or Mezzo Soprano. Do you sing most comfortably from E4 to A5? While a Soprano can extend their chest voice higher, they often prefer to switch to head voice very early on in their range. Also pay attention to whether your chest or head voice is more comfortable overall. If it's your head voice, then you are probably a soprano!

This video ended abruptly suggesting that there was more you were going to say. If not, then you’re encouraging the use of the vocalese with a dumb face which benefits any vocal style of music, correct?@30daysinger

I would pull the mic away on the transient of the louder syllable instead of gradually pulling it away as the note decays. If anything you would pull it sharply away upon "striking" the louder syllable and then slowly bring it closer rather than slowly pulling it away. Just my 2 cents

For clarification, the lower abdomen and back are expanding on the inhale phase, but in the exhale phase, the abdomen is naturally contracting, correct? You are not consciously engaging (tightening) the abdominal muscles to slow down the air flow. 🙏🏼

‏‪34:38‬‏ You are saying its important for lower voice guys to practice their head voice. I did practice my range and being able to get up to c6 with head voice (not breathy falsetto) and very nice whistle notes (up to g7), but when i did it too much sometimes i got hoarse. So someone told me i should stay in my comfort chest range and work on support, before even try practicing head voice, otherwise i can damage my voice for good.. so im confused, whos right?
